Press ReleasesXFP INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION ADDS NEW MEMBER COMPANIESOrganization Developing Ultra-Small Form Factor, 10 Gb/s Communications Modules
NEWS RELEASE COSTA MESA, Calif., May 16, 2002– The 10-Gigabit Small Form-factor Pluggable (XFP) Module Group, a module Multi Source Agreement (MSA) association, today announced more than 30 companies have joined the association since its inception in March 2002. The purpose of the XFP association is to develop a common specification for multi-sourcing application-agnostic, ultra-small form factor, 10 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) modules. Because the XFP specification is not protocol dependent, multiple market segments will benefit from the aggregate volume of XFP modules. The newest participants in the 44 member association include Accelerant Networks, Agilent Technologies, Altra Broadband, Analog Devices, Inc., BitBlitz Communications, Cortina Systems, E2O Communications, Inc., EMC Corp., Fourte' Design and Development, Fujitsu Quantum Devices, Gennum Corporation, GTRAN, Inc., HARTING Electro-Optics, Ignis Optics, Inc., Infinera Corporation, Intel Corporation, I-TECH Corp., Luminent, Inc. (an MRV Communications Company), Marvell Semiconductor, Inc., MergeOptics GmbH, Mindspeed Technologies, Molex Incorporated, NEC Corporation, Optium, Picolight, Inc., PMC-Sierra, Primarion, Inc., Sigma-Links, Inc. (an OKI and Fujikura joint venture), Silicon Bridge, Inc., Spirent Communications Inc., Stratos Lightwave, Inc., Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation and Xilinx, Inc. The XFP prototype modules, designed to occupy one-fifth the space and use one-half the power of current modules, were successfully demonstrated at the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC) held in Anaheim, Calif., March 19-21, 2002.
"Our experience at OFC showed that XFP is a viable telecommunications, data communications and SAN solution, " said Bob Snively, principal engineer at Brocade, and chairman of the group. We are very pleased with the growth of the association to date, and have already distributed the first draft of the specification to our member companies for technical review. Our next key objective is to develop by August a preliminary XFP specification for wider review." The XFP Group is composed of networking, system, optical module, semiconductor and connector companies from the telecommunications, data communications and storage area network markets. The association is dedicated to technology and standards development for ultra-small form factor, 10 Gb/s communications modules. Such modules feature an electrical interface called XFI, which removes the complexity and power associated with placing electrical transceivers inside currently available modules, resulting in significant space, power and cost savings to module suppliers and system manufacturers. The founding members of XFP include: Broadcom Corporation, Brocade Communications, Emulex Corp. (NASDAQ: EMLX), Finisar Corporation, JDS Uniphase, Maxim Integrated Products, ONI Systems Corp., Innovation Core SEI (a Sumitomo Electric company), Tyco Electronics and Velio Communications. XFP Group Founded in March 2002, the 10-Gigabit Small Form-factor Pluggable (XFP) Module Group is an industry association dedicated to technology and standards development for ultra-small form factor, 10 Gb/s communications modules for the telecommunications and data communications markets.
